What is an Internet Video Channel? |
An Internet video channel is a special kind of web application that enables an audience to find and to choose a movie they wish to watch via a specialised menu system. The BBC iPlayer is an example of a broadcaster using the Internet to create a mass-audience channel. In most Internet video channels the video is usually displayed at a small size because the quality is too low for full screen viewing.
The FamilyCam video channel is a much more personal thing. With your FamilyCam channel, you are the content owner and your audience is yourself and your trusted friends and family and no one else. And with a FamilyCam channel the video starts out at a small display size but once it is playing, you can make it fill the screen of the PC, Mac or TV you are using and you can sit back and watch your movies in full and at high quality.

How do I set up a FamilyCam Channel? |
All FamilyCam members are provided with their own personal FamilyCam channel as soon as they register with us. When you first register, you will be granted one free hour of video storage and you get a short sample movie that you can play with in your channel to help you understand all the main features of FamilyCam, like full-screen viewing, scene browsing, scene tagging and scene tag search.
If you like what you see, you can put your own videos into your free account as long as you store no more than one hour in total. When you're ready to place more video into your FamilyCam account, you can upgrade to one of our higher volume storage accounts and you can store from 5 to 100 hours of video and organise all of it into different movie categories. With all FamilyCam account packages we charge a simple and competitive annual subscription and you only pay for storage, nothing else.

How do I get my video into my FamilyCam Channel? |
There are two ways to put your home camcorder and other special movies into your FamilyCam account. You can upload them yourself or you can use our professional media conversion service and we'll do it all for you.
If you have the means to extract your video from your own camcorder or your legacy tapes and get it onto your PC yourself, you can use our special video uploader. You can do this using a wide range of tools and techniques and we offer guidance on how to do this in our Video Uploader and Video Preparation FAQs. The FamilyCam upload tool first converts your video files to a streaming quality format and then uploads them directly into your FamilyCam account.
If you prefer, you can use our professional media conversion service. You tell us what media types (tapes, discs, cine reels) and how many of each you want us to convert and we send you special packaging to help you send us your media collection safely. We digitise all your videos and put them into your FamilyCam account for you. Then we return your original media safe and sound.

Why can't I copy video from FamilyCam into Bebo/FaceBook etc.? |
You can't. It is fundamental to our policies on protecting the privacy and security of our members' video content that we absolutely will not allow sharing of video from FamilyCam to anywhere else.
| |
How can I be sure that no one else can watch my FamilyCam videos? |
With online banking, you can only access your bank accounts if you go through a secure login process. Only you can do this. It's the same with FamilyCam. Your videos can only be accessed through your FamilyCam channel and you can only open your FamilyCam channel by going through our secure member authentication process.
The only exception is that you can set up trusted Guest Groups to whom you can grant access to some or all of your videos and video categories. For example you might set up one guest group for your immediate family to watch your family videos, weddings and social events etc. and another guest group who can watch videos about shared leisure interests. It's up to you, but however many guests you invite, they must be trusted by you to keep safe the access passwords you give them.

What is the difference between FamilyCam and YouTube? |
FamilyCam is the opposite of YouTube. With YouTube, you upload short and often trivial video clips which are then converted to small-format low quality video that millions of people can watch via YouTube.com. YouTube is all about mass sharing.
With FamilyCam you can store many hours of full length home movies and watch them at very high quality and full-screen using a Mac, PC or TV (with a MediaCentre). With FamilyCam you can rest assured that none of your private home movies can be found or watched by anyone but you and your invited guests. FamilyCam is all about quality and privacy.
